I did a good bit of research before packing my panniers full of essentials for an open-ended bike tour through Eastern Europe…Along with two pairs of bike shorts, a few pairs of wool socks, arm and knee warmers, and rain gear, I packed three Merino wool shirts along for the ride, two being Icebreaker’s Aero Crewe model: one short-sleeved and one sleeveless…

The Internet is full of claims that Merino wool performs above and beyond. So, how did it do in real life?

The Aero has a light, soft and springy feel when you put it on. The 120 featherweight material is made with 90% merino wool and 10% nylon. Icebreaker tags each garment with a unique “baacode,” which allows customers to learn more about the New Zealand merino wool farms that produced the wool for their garments. I typed my shirt’s “baacode” into the Icebreaker website and traced the wool in my shirt to 5 of their 120 merino farms.

I’ve been wearing this shirt around town, while hiking and even as a sleep shirt while camping. The 120 featherweight material is thin, but feels relatively durable. The 10% nylon likely adds a bit of strength to the material…

Wool. It’s been around a long time. When you were little, your grandmother probably knitted you an itchy sweater, which you were forced to wear during the holidays. That’s what comes to mind when we think of the word wool. Or, of course, sheep.
